SUMMARY:LOCAL AUTHOR- GEORGE LONGSTRETH\, MD - SEPTEMBER 11 @ 5:30 PM
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to invite Maine Author George Longstreth to Graves Library on Wednesday\, September 11 at 5:30 pm.  Dr. Longstreth will be here to talk about his latest work Shot Down Over The Soviet Union\, A Strategic Air Command Finally Revealed. \n \n  \nBorn and raised in Fairfield\, Connecticut\, George B. Longstreth\, MD earned his medical doctorate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1965. Spending six years in New York City\, first in Spanish Harlem\, then in Hell’s Kitchen\, he lived among many of the characters and events that he now uses in his novels. After a surgical stint in the US Navy\, followed by ten years in rural northwest Connecticut\, George and his wife Betsy enjoyed an active surgical practice in Fairfield during the 1980s and ’90s. This included on-call rotations to the Emergency Room at near-by Bridgeport Hospital\, where an unhealthy sampling of the drug-world underbelly came for urgent care. Betsy and George now live in active retirement in Kennebunkport\, Maine\, where they are kept busy by family (including 19 grandchildren)\, friends\, unusual characters and happenings\, and a dog named Jane. \nCopies of the book will be available for sale and signing. The Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport. For further information\, please call 967-2778 or visit www.graveslibrary.org. \n

SUMMARY:MAINE ARTIST WADE ZAHARES - SEPTEMBER 14 @ 2:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:THE PATSY BRAY MAHONEY LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS \nWe are so excited to invite the very talented Maine Artist Wade Zahares to Graves Library on Saturday\, September 14 at 2 PM. \nWade works exclusively in pastels; he is drawn to the intimacy of the chalk and the ease with which he can blend colors. The magic happens in his studio\, a converted shed just off his main house. The studio\, equipped with 15-foot ceilings and a house gutter to catch all the pastel dust\, is set on 5 1/2 acres of farmland in Lyman\, Maine\, just a few miles from the Kennebunk farm on which he grew up. When Wade needs a break\, he goes for a drive to soak up the New England landscape—his biggest inspiration—or tends to his flowers\, gardens\, and fruit trees. Then he returns to his studio\, refreshed and ready to make more magic. \nWade will be here to talk about his work and his passion and demonstrate how he goes about his craft. \nLight refreshments will be provided by the Graves Library Snack Team. Please call the Library for more information on this event and the rest of the series (967-2778). \nParking is available along Maine Street\, the North Street Fire Station Parking Lot\, and Consolidated School (Route 9). \nThe Graves Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport\, Maine. Please enter through the white door in the Parking Lot.

SUMMARY:MAINE AUTHOR IRENE DRAGO - OCTOBER 5 @ 2:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:THE PATSY BRAY MAHONEY LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS \nMaine Author Irene Drago will be here at the Graves Library on Saturday\, October 5 at 2:00 pm to talk about her passion for writing and the sea. \nBorn in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge\, Irene M. Drago developed a keen interest in every kind of watercraft at an early age. Before moving to Maine\, she worked for the Defense Department as a Russian analyst\, earned a Master of Arts degree in Spanish language and literature\, and taught at the high school and college level. Her debut novel\, Daughters of Long Reach\, was a 2018 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Winner\, First Novel and led to a sequel\, The Maine Point. More recently\, Lavinia Wren and the Sailmakers is a 2023 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist\, Regional Fiction. If Drago isn’t penning a story\, you’re apt to find her giving a shipyard tour at Maine Maritime Museum or leading a creative writing workshop. But in fair weather\, there’s a good chance you’ll find her piloting her Maritime Skiff on Casco Bay. \n \nCopies of Ms. Drago’s books will be available for sale and signing after the discussion. \nLight refreshments will be provided by the Graves Library Snack Team.  Please call the Library for more information on this event and the rest of the series (967-2778).   Parking is available along Maine Street\, the North Street Fire Station Parking Lot\, and Consolidated School (Route 9). \nThe Graves Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport\, Maine.  Please enter through the white door in the Parking Lot.

SUMMARY:AUTHOR EVENT - LOU SALOME - NOVEMBER 14 @ 5:30 PM
DESCRIPTION:You might know him as our “visiting professor.” News reporter and editor\, Lou Salome will be at the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library on Thursday\, November 14 @ 5:30 pm to talk about his new book\, Two Hundred Miles from Bagdad: Cultures\, conflicts\, and the lost art of hitchhiking.”  Copies will be for sale and signing after the discussion. No registration is required. \n \nIn September\, 1958\, Lou Salome hurried past Barney McNeil’s blacksmith shop to the town’s blinking traffic light and began hitchhiking to college.  He was seventeen.  Decades later his hitching experience led Salome through deserts and hostile zones in Asia\, Europe\, and Africa.  At the end of his International life\, he thumbed in the New Hampshire woods to gauge how times had changed.  This is his story of the adventures\, risks and fun he embraced while engaging in a lost art. \nA New Englander by birth\, Lou Salome holds a bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross College in Worcester\, Massachusetts where he was a classmate of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s. He also has a Master’s Degree in American History from Boston College\, and a Ph.D in hitchhiking and news reporting on four continents. Mr. Lou\, as he was known in foreign climes\, hitched to college for two years in the late fifties\, hitched into and out of battle zones in Asia\, Africa\, and Europe in the nineties\, and hitched for fun\, but with little success\, in the New Hampshire woods in 2004 while writing books. A newspaper reporter and editor for thirty-five years and an author since 2010\, Lou has written three books\, the latest about his hitching experiences\, the lost art of hitchhiking\, and the social and economic changes that doomed the art. As the editorial page editor of The Miami (FL) News\, Lou Salome won numerous journalism prizes. In 1981 and 1984\, he won the National Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Distinguished Service Award for Editorial Writing. In 1984\, he won the Jamaica Daily Gleamer Editorial Writing Award given by the Inter-American Press Association\, In 1987\, he won the first annual Thomas Jefferson First Amendment Award given by the Cultural Action Network. \nThe Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport.  Please call is for details (207-967-2778).
