SUMMARY:MAINE AUTHOR PETER BROWN - MAY 14 @ 5:30 PM
DESCRIPTION:Peter Brown will be here at the Graves Library on Wednesday\, May 14 @ 5:30 pm to talk about his book\, I am Jayvyn. \nPeter is a Maine-based author of historical fiction with a deep interest in social justice and a passion for preserving history. His writing relies on a deep commitment to historical accuracy while aiming to illuminate stories of the oppressed or misunderstood. Presented alongside proclivities typical of the human condition\, he challenges his readers to confront uncomfortable truths and engage with the complexities of the human experience.  Retired now from formal enterprise\, Peter lives in a quiet\, pastoral township in Maine with his loving wife and two dogs\, where he enjoys ample quietude and peace to gain inspiration\, sort out his thoughts\, and bring them to life.  Through his work\, Peter hopes to promote thoughtful conversations about the enduring impact of history on contemporary society. \n \n  \n  \nThis novel is a compelling work of historical fiction positioned to remind readers of the reality of the transatlantic slave trade and the key role the enslaved played in the development of America.  Cir. 1710: On a beautiful morning full of hope and promise\, twelve-year-old Javyn’s world is suddenly shattered when English slavers raid his peaceful village. His father is killed\, he is separated from his mother and little sister\, and his home is left in flames. In a whirlwind of change\, Jayvyn survives the horrors of the middle passage alone\, landing in Barbados\, where he endures two years of ‘seasoning’ on a sugar plantation. His adolescent development progresses under the tutelage of Andrew\, a fellow enslaved African\, in desperate circumstances he could never have imagined.  In time\, Jayvyn is sold again and survives another harrowing ocean voyage to South Carolina\, where he is auctioned off to the owner of a growing rice plantation. Jayvyn lives his life amongst a diverse cast of fellow enslaved in a world where love\, hate\, and cruelty coexist as families are formed and separated at the whim of masters who see the enslaved as nothing more than chattel property. Colonial history unfolds while this resilient community of enslaved Africans adapt to an ever-changing world of oppression and subjugation.  Over the course of his life\, Jayvyn gains a healthy perspective on the virtues and flaws of humanity—even transcending the high threshold of forgiveness—leaving readers with abundant food for thought delivered in an appalling tale of pain and suffering\, but also one of true faith and deliverance told through the clear lens of history. \n  \nCopies of the book will be available for sale and signing after the program.  The Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport.  Please give us a call with any questions you may have about this event (or others).  207-967-2778.

SUMMARY:JUST HISTORY PROJECT - SATURDAY\, JUNE 7 @ 1:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Kennebunk resident Bill Grabin to Graves Library on Saturday\, June 7 @ 1:00 pm to give us an overview of the Just History Project Website recently launched by the Brick Store Museum.  Mr. Grabin will go through the goals of the JHP website and how to contribute to this ongoing resource. \nThe Just History Project website\, an initiative aimed at uncovering and documenting the often-overlooked histories of Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color in Kennebunk and the surrounding towns of Wells\, Kennebunkport and Arundel\, has been launched by the Brick Store Museum. The resulting Just History Database can be found on the Museum’s website at www.brickstoremuseum.org/justhistory. The site intends to tell the stories of individuals who lived in the region before European colonization and through periods of enslavement and oppression. \nThe project will continue to expand as new information is uncovered\, continuously offering a more complete picture of the region’s past. The Museum welcomes contributions regarding individuals that could be added\, or related information.  The Database includes hundreds of people; as well as a search and index page. Additionally\, the website contains a section for research articles that complement and expand on the information included in the database. It is designed to be an educational resource for students\, researchers\, and community members alike. Work to develop the technology behind the database was supported by a grant from the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation and additional advisory contributions from the Museum’s community partner BBsquared. \nThe complex relationships between interconnected groups dramatically shaped this region’s past\, and continue to impact us today. Through extensive research now published in the online database\, the project has uncovered hundreds of names and stories of people whose lives were previously undocumented or forgotten. \n“When I began this project\, I did not anticipate how many stories I would uncover and how many of the early settlers of our towns would be involved. I was particularly impacted by the primary source documents that I was able to locate\,” said lead researcher Bill Grabin.  For more information about the Just History Project or to access the database\, please visit www.brickstoremuseum.org/justhistory. \nThe Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport\, Maine.  Parking for this event is available at Consolidated School (Route 9) and the Village Fire Station (North Street).  Doors open at 12:30 pm \n  \nThe above photo is from the New Hampshire Gazette and Historical Chronicle\, appearing in the December 30\, 1774\, January 6\, 1775 and January 13\, 1775 editions.
