SUMMARY:HISTORIAN SHARON CUMMINS - STORIES OF LOCAL CITIZENS DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
DESCRIPTION:KENNEBUNKPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S SHARON CUMMINS WILL SHARE STORIES OF ARUNDEL CITIZENS DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, AT HOME AND AWAY\, ON MAY 27th AS PART OF GRAVES LIBRARY’S SERIES OF SPECIAL EVENTS CELEBRATING AMERICA’S 250th ANNIVERSARY \n \n  \nAs part of the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library’s 2026 series of authors and speakers celebrating America’s 250th anniversary\, Kennebunkport Historical Society historian Sharon Cummins will share stories of Arundel citizens during the American Revolution\, at home and away\, on Wednesday\, May 27\, at 4 p.m. at the Louis T. Graves Library. \nThis special event\, held in collaboration with the Kennebunkport Historical Society and part of the Louis T. Graves Library’s Patsy Bray Mahoney Lecture Series\, is free and open to the public. Cummins’s talk will cover events ranging from receiving word of the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord to the naval battle at Cape Porpoise Harbor. To reserve seats call (207) 967-2778. \nCummins\, a Maine native and historian associated with the Kennebunkport Historical Society\, is a popular speaker and writer\, sharing her well-researched topics\, tales\, and archival photos on the lecture circuit\, through a weekly column called “Throwback Thursday\,” and the society’s social media. Her work emphasizes preserving local archival treasures and making them accessible to the public. Her topics include the 1867 murder trial of Jane M. Swett\, early 20th century school history\, and local landmarks. \nCummins’s lecture is the first in a series of three semiquincentennial events hosted by the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library. The second event features two Washington political insiders—Jean Becker\, chief of staff for President George H.W. Bush\, and Tom Collamore\, former presidential aide\, discussing their new book “Don’t Tell the President: The Best\, Worst & Mostly Untold Stories from Presidential Advance” at the historic Kennebunk River Club on June 18th. On July 30th\, iconic filmmaker Ken Burns comes to town\, appearing at Kennebunk High School in conversation with Rob Caldwell\, one of Maine’s premier TV news anchors. Both events are library fundraisers. For more information call (207) 967-2778. \nThe Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library\, housed in an historic 19th century building located near Kennebunkport’s famous Dock Square town center\, is a full-service free library whose mission is “to enrich the lives of all we serve.” A nonprofit organization\, Graves Library receives 60 percent of its operating budget from donations and other fundraising sources. \nFounded in 1952\, the Kennebunkport Historical Society preserves and shares the history of Kennebunkport\, Maine through historic properties\, archival collections\, educational programs\, and community events that connect residents and visitors with the town’s rich heritage.

SUMMARY:JEAN BECKER AND TOM COLLAMORE - JUNE 18 AT 5:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:LOUIS T. GRAVES MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY \n~ ANNUAL AUTHOR EVENT ~ \nJUNE 18 AT 5:00 PM AT THE KENNEBUNK RIVER CLUB \n \nBUY TICKETS HERE \nThe Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library Board of Trustees invites you to an evening with Jean Becker and Tom Collamore. \nThe Annual Summer Author Event will be held Thursday\, June 18 at the Kennebunk River Club\, 116 Ocean Avenue\, Kennebunkport. Doors open at 5:00 PM for cocktails and appetizers with the program beginning promptly at 6:00 PM. As the library’s largest annual fundraiser\, the event supports the library’s essential operations and celebrates the community’s commitment to ideas\, featuring nationally recognized authors and speakers. \nBringing together the most hilarious and harrowing stories behind presidential events over the past 60 years\, former staffers to President George H.W. Bush—Jean Becker and Tom Collamore—will discuss their new book “Don’t Tell the President: The Best\, Worst & Mostly Untold Stories from Presidential Advance” at 6 p.m. on June 18 at the Kennebunk River Club Casino. \nBecker was President Bush’s chief of staff for nearly 25 years\, the editor of “Pearls of Wisdom (with Barbara Bush)” and author of the New York Times bestseller “The Man I Knew: The Amazing Story of George H.W. Bush’s Post-Presidency.” Tom Collamore served in various senior roles throughout the 12 years of President Ronald Reagan and President Bush’s administration. \nHosted by the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library in Kennebunkport\, this event is part of the library’s Distinguished Speaker Series\, annual fundraising events featuring nationally recognized authors and speakers. All proceeds from ticket sales and event sponsorships support the library’s essential programs and services. Purchase two tickets ($100 each) and receive a copy of “Don’t Tell the President”. \nBehind the seemingly seamless campaign appearances and presidential affairs lie the meticulous work of event planners and advance teams—the little-known professionals who transform political logistics into carefully choreographed performances. From the Rose Garden to Air Force One\, foreign trips to state dinners\, co-authors Becker and Collamore detail the art of preparation that goes in these delicate\, high-stress operations and reveal how they are often just one step away from disaster. \n“This collection of memories and stories about the modern American presidency has everything\,” says Robert Gates\, former US. Secretary of Defense: “Never-before-told tales\, near disasters\, and last-minute saves\, insider intrigue\, dramatic events and humor.” \nBrad Meltzer\, New York Times bestselling author\, concurs: “The stories are wild.” And nobody knows these stories better\, and can share them with more insight\, perspective and humor\, than Jean Becker and Tom Collamore. \nTickets for this highly entertaining and informative River Club event are now on sale online at Eventbrite HERE or in person at the library\, 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport. For more information call (207) 967-2778. \nThe Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library\, house in an historic 10th century building located near Kennebunkport’s famous Dock Square town center\, is a full-service free library whose mission is “to enrich the lives of all we serve.” A nonprofit organization\, Graves Library receives 60 percent of its operating budget from donations and other fundraising sources. \nThank you\, Kennebunk Savings\, Louise Hurlbutt\, Maine & Vine\, and Octopus Books. \n

Burgess Author Night is hosted by the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library in Kennebunkport\, Maine and is open to the public. Clifford Burgess was a civic leader in Kennebunkport in the 1980s whose memory lives on with his family’s generous support. These annual fundraising events feature nationally recognized\, popular authors. All proceeds from ticket sales and event sponsorships support the library’s essential operations. \nI Know This Much Is True\, a family saga that follows the parallel lives of identical twin brothers in an epic story of betrayal\, sacrifice\, and forgiveness\, was adopted for an HBO miniseries starring Mark Ruffalo in a dual role as twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. Ruffalo’s performance won him a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. \nLamb’s other popular novels include I’ll Take You There\, We Are Water\, Wishin’ and Hopin’\, and The Hour I First Believed. He also taught creative writing in the English Department at the University of Connecticut. Lamb lives in Connecticut with his wife\, Christine\, and they have three sons. \nTickets for Wally Lamb will be available online at vinhillmusic.com in late April. \nThis is a popular fall event that sells out quickly\, so buy your tickets today! \nThank you to our sponsors: Clifford W. Burgess\, Vinegar Hill\, Kennebunk Savings\, Colony Hotel\, Louise Hurlbutt\, and Octopus Books \n\nSPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: CLIFFORD W. BURGESS/2026 Fall Author Night \nHe Loved His Family\, His Town\, Graves Library\, and Roller Coasters \nClifford W. Burgess’ memory lives on with his family’s generous sponsorship of the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library’s October event with award-winning author Adam Higginbotham. \nClifford Wilson Burgess quickly became a man about town when he retired as president of a large\, successful photo engraving company in western Massachusetts and moved to Kennebunkport fulltime\nin 1974. He and his wife\, Mary\, had been vacationing in Maine since 1968. Clifford had a great many passions and interests. He became deeply involved in town politics\, becoming a member of the town’s Planning Board for nine years and a member of the Select Board for six years. He was also active on the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library board and the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust. \nBut it was Clifford’s quirky nature that endeared him to the town’s residents. He was a self-styled Anglophile and was well known in town for walking his Airedale\, Rocky\, around his neighborhood sporting a tweed jacket. A graduate of Bard College\, he was an omnivorous reader and a lifelong student of English history and architecture. He and Mary lived in a Tudor-style cottage that was known as The Shakespeare House. In retirement he became an accomplished oil painter\, and many of his paintings grace the homes of family members and friends. Clifford had a distinctive laugh\, what some might call a giggle. He loved to watch (and rewatch) The Three Stooges\, giggling the whole time. \nClifford had strong opinions about things\, and wrote frequent letters to the local newspapers\, often disagreeing with elected officials and the other powers that be. He knew about literature\, architecture\, history\, and politics\, and he brought those subjects to bear in his lively missives. To combat the debilitating effects of acute arthritis\, Clifford was always on the move\, walking his dog\, riding one of his several racing bikes\, or swimming with friends several days a week in Dover\, New Hampshire. \nBut to those who knew him well\, one of his most charming traits was his love of roller coasters. Over the years\, Mary would drive him all over so he could ride the biggest and the best roller coasters\nAmerica had to offer. He rode each roller coaster twice—one trip in the front seat and one trip in the back seat. Two completely different experiences he would tell you\, a “rode scholar” on the subject.
