SUMMARY:AN AFTERNOON OF PAUL REVERE - APRIL 12 @ 1:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:THE MIDNIGHT RIDE OF PAUL REVERE \nApril 12 ~ 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM \nWe are thrilled to invite our good friend and neighbor\, Tom Putnam\, to the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library on Saturday\, April 12 @ 1:00 pm to celebrate and discuss the life and legend of Paul Revere.\nIt was one Maine’s most famous sons\, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow\, who singlehandedly turned Paul Revere into one of the most recognized heroes of the American Revolution. As the country prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the historic battles of Lexington and Concord\, Mr. Putnam will offer a multimedia presentation about the events of April 19\, 1775\, as well as how Longfellow’s poem\, Paul\nRevere’s Ride\, written some 86 years afterwards\, memorialized Revere in hopes of inspiring Longfellow’s fellow citizens to support the abolitionist cause in the buildup of the Civil War. \nA graduate of Kennebunk High School\, Tom Putnam is the former Director of the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston and of the Concord Museum in Concord\, Massachusetts. He currently lives here in Kennebunkport. \n \n[Painting by N.C. Wyeth] \nRefreshments will be provided by the Graves Library Snack Team.  Doors open at 12:30 pm.  The Graves Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport.  Please give us a call at 967-2778 with any questions about this event.

SUMMARY:LOCAL AUTHOR ~ JENNIFER COMEAU - APRIL 26 @ 2:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:Local author\, poet\, and musician Jennifer Comeau will be here at Graves Library on Saturday\, April 26 at 2:00 pm to discuss her debut novel A Moon in All Things. \nIn the wild heart of 1820s Ireland\, young Morrigan Lane hears the sea’s call—and her ancestors’ ancient voices. Born with a connection to the mystical lands of her Celtic heritage\, Morrigan is no ordinary girl. She dreams of adventure\, breaking free from the restrictions of village life\, and\, above all\, sailing beyond the distant horizon.  But Morrigan finds herself pulled into a mysterious journey when a haunting vision of the Irish sea god\, Manannán mac Lir\, beckons her into his shadowy world. Against the backdrop of Ireland’s rugged cliffs and ancient stone circles\, she must navigate myth and reality\, confronting age-old traditions\, family secrets\, and the fierce expectations placed upon her as a young woman. A Moon in All Things is a spellbinding tale of Celtic mysticism\, forbidden dreams\, and the resilience of the human spirit. Fans of historical fantasy and coming-of-age adventures will be swept away by Morrigan’s quest for self-discovery in a world where land and sea\, myth and truth\, are deeply intertwined. \nPerfect for readers enchanted by Irish folklore\, women’s journeys\, and stories that echo the timeless call of nature\, A Moon in All Things reminds us that the true magic of life is waiting if we dare to reach for it. \nFans of Outlander’s Claire Fraser and The Frozen River’s Martha Ballard will enjoy Comeau’s Morrigan Lane\, who is fiercely devoted to discovering her healing gifts while those in power call them “dangerous.” \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nHer stories\, songs\, speaking events\, and nature-based walks and workshops all seek to help you remember and restore your sacred partnership with the rest of the natural world.  She grew up one of eight children in suburban Tonawanda\, New York. Following the dictates of family and societal programming\, she jumped into the world of engineering\, earning a Masters of Engineering from University at Buffalo\, and a Bachelors of Industrial Engineering at General Motors Institute\, now Kettering University.  After decades working as an executive for manufacturers in the auto industry and then in information systems\, she returned to her early love for how words\, music\, nature\, and beautiful places can enliven the whole landscape of a life. She began to write songs\, and stories — speaking and performing them throughout the country\, and soon\, narrowed her focus to align with her reverence for Earth. \n \nCopies of the book will be available for sale and signing after the discussion.  Light refreshments will be served. \nThe Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport. For further information\, please call 967-2778 or visit www.graveslibrary.org. Parking is available on Maine Street\, Consolidated School (Route 9)\, and the Village Fire Station (North Street). Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:MAINE AUTHOR PETER BROWN - MAY 14 @ 5:30 PM
DESCRIPTION:Peter Brown will be here at the Graves Library on Wednesday\, May 14 @ 5:30 pm to talk about his book\, I am Jayvyn. \nPeter is a Maine-based author of historical fiction with a deep interest in social justice and a passion for preserving history. His writing relies on a deep commitment to historical accuracy while aiming to illuminate stories of the oppressed or misunderstood. Presented alongside proclivities typical of the human condition\, he challenges his readers to confront uncomfortable truths and engage with the complexities of the human experience.  Retired now from formal enterprise\, Peter lives in a quiet\, pastoral township in Maine with his loving wife and two dogs\, where he enjoys ample quietude and peace to gain inspiration\, sort out his thoughts\, and bring them to life.  Through his work\, Peter hopes to promote thoughtful conversations about the enduring impact of history on contemporary society. \n \n  \n  \nThis novel is a compelling work of historical fiction positioned to remind readers of the reality of the transatlantic slave trade and the key role the enslaved played in the development of America.  Cir. 1710: On a beautiful morning full of hope and promise\, twelve-year-old Javyn’s world is suddenly shattered when English slavers raid his peaceful village. His father is killed\, he is separated from his mother and little sister\, and his home is left in flames. In a whirlwind of change\, Jayvyn survives the horrors of the middle passage alone\, landing in Barbados\, where he endures two years of ‘seasoning’ on a sugar plantation. His adolescent development progresses under the tutelage of Andrew\, a fellow enslaved African\, in desperate circumstances he could never have imagined.  In time\, Jayvyn is sold again and survives another harrowing ocean voyage to South Carolina\, where he is auctioned off to the owner of a growing rice plantation. Jayvyn lives his life amongst a diverse cast of fellow enslaved in a world where love\, hate\, and cruelty coexist as families are formed and separated at the whim of masters who see the enslaved as nothing more than chattel property. Colonial history unfolds while this resilient community of enslaved Africans adapt to an ever-changing world of oppression and subjugation.  Over the course of his life\, Jayvyn gains a healthy perspective on the virtues and flaws of humanity—even transcending the high threshold of forgiveness—leaving readers with abundant food for thought delivered in an appalling tale of pain and suffering\, but also one of true faith and deliverance told through the clear lens of history. \n  \nCopies of the book will be available for sale and signing after the program.  The Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport.  Please give us a call with any questions you may have about this event (or others).  207-967-2778.
