SUMMARY:WINE ON-LINE FEBRUARY
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually via Zoom on February 22 at 5:30 pm for a fun hour of wine tasting\, information\, and trivia! Local wine gurus Lani Dietz and Betsy Ross will guide us through the program with ideas\, pairings\, and educational tidbits as we sip wines selected by our two experts. This will be a Zoom presentation moderated by Mary-Lou Boucouvalas\, Library Director. \nFor anyone new to this very popular monthly event\, Lani and Betsy choose the pair of wines prior to the event. Each time\, we “experience” wines from a specific country or new varietal. All participants are encouraged to purchase the month’s wines from Maine & Vine (Kings Wharfe\, Ocean Ave) or Wine House on Main (Kennebunk). \nPlease call the Library (207) 967-2778 or email mlbgraves@gmail.com to register so that we can send you the Zoom link prior to the event. The best part is\, you don’t have to worry about driving! \n

SUMMARY:PLANTING FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE - MAY 8 @ 5:30 PM
DESCRIPTION:PLANTING FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE IN NORTHEAST LANDSCAPES \nWEDNESDAY\, MAY 8 AT 5:30 PM \nTogether with our Friends of Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge\, we are very excited to be hosting members of the Wild Seed Project. In addition to helping to sustain vital pollinators\, birds\, and other wildlife\, native plantings offer countless other benefits that are indispensable in the age of climate change. When created and maintained with ecologically attuned landscaping practices\, they can minimize flooding and storm water runoff\, shade and cool cities\, survive droughts\, and facilitate carbon storage more effectively than the landscapes dominated by turf and mulch that blanket so many of our communities. \nAndrea Berry from the Wild Seed Project will talk about the actions you can take to make your corner of the world more biodiverse and resilient to the effects of climate change. Andrea joined Wild Seed Project as the organization’s Executive Director in 2021. She also serves on the Board of Directors at Momentum Conservation and Resources for Organizing and Social Change. \nColin McKevitt\, Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge Biological Technician\, will address habitat management and native species planting. This includes shrubland habitats\, salt marsh field surveying and restoration\, and monitoring and managing invasive species. Colin is a key member of the Refuge team and is the manager of the Refuge native plant greenhouse. He instructs interns as well as community volunteers. \n \nCopies of the publication “Planting for Climate Resilience” will be available for sale. \nThe Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport. For further information\, please call 967-2778 or visit our website at www.graveslibrary.org.

SUMMARY:CARL and DAVID LITTLE - THE ART OF PENOBSCOT BAY - MAY 18 @ 2:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:THE PATSY BRAY MAHONEY LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS \nWe are thrilled to welcome back Carl Little and David Little to the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library on Saturday\, May 18 at 2:00 pm.  Their latest book published by Yarmouth-based Islandport Press reflects a true and beautiful representation of Maine’s Penobscot area. \n \nFor Art of Penobscot Bay\, brothers David and Carl Little\, well-known stewards of Maine art\, have selected art and artists\, from history and today\, that celebrate the myriad of inlets\, islands\, coves\, and peninsulas—the “nooks and corners” of the region. Above all\, they sought out art infused with a remarkable representation of place by more than 120 artists who have embraced the area and its people. Art of Penobscot Bay includes artists from the 19th century through the 21st century\, including Fitz Henry Lane\, Waldo Peirce\, Edward Hopper\, William Zorach\, John Marin\, Emily Muir\, Greta Van Campen\, Alex Katz\, Eric Hopkins\, and Amy Peters Wood. Combined with text by the Little brothers\, the art takes readers on a wondrous visual journey around\, across\, and through a breathtaking bay. \nBorn in New York City\, Carl Little holds degrees from Dartmouth\, Middlebury\, and Columbia. Little is the author of more than 30 art books\, including The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent\, Edward Hopper’s New England\, and Paintings of Maine. His book Eric Hopkins: Above and Beyond won the first John Cole Prize from the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance in 2012. Little writes for Art New England\, Hyperallergic\, Maine Boats\, Homes & Harbors\, The Working Waterfront\, Island Journal\, and Ornament. In 2021 the Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Foundation honored Little with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his art writing. He lives and writes on Mount Desert Island. \n  \nDavid Little is the author of Art of Katahdin\, named a “Best of New England” book by the Boston Globe in 2013. He is a co-author with his brother Carl of Art of Acadia (2016) and Paintings of Portland (2018). In 2017 he took part in a national symposium at Colby College\, “Valuing the Aesthetics of Nature: The Role of the Visual Artist in the American Conservation Movement.” Little holds an M.A. and M.F.A. in painting from the University of Iowa\, attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (1981 and 1982)\, and has had residencies on Monhegan Island and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. He lives with his wife Mikki in Portland. Find more about David at www.davidlittleart.com. \n  \nCopies of the book will also be available for sale and signing after the event.  Light refreshments will be provided by the Graves Library Snack Team.  Please call the Library for more information on this event and the rest of the series (967-2778). \nParking is available along Maine Street\, the North Street Fire Station Parking Lot\, and Consolidated School (Route 9).  If the weather is bad\, please check your local television stations for updates on our listings or send us an email to:  mlbgraves@gmail.com \nWe would also like to thank The Kennebunkport Resort Collection for being a sponsor of this event.  Your support of community non-profits is greatly appreciated!

SUMMARY:LOCAL AUTHOR FREDERICK BOYLE
DESCRIPTION:Genealogy expert and Maine resident\, Frederick Boyle will be at the Graves Library on Wednesday\, June 12 at 6:00 p.m. to talk about his new book  Early Families of Kennebunkport\, Maine. Copies of the book will be for sale after the presentation. \n \n\nA bit about Fred:\n\nHe was a retired teacher after thirty years at Lexington (MA) High School\, where he was designated a master teacher. In recent years\, he returned to teaching classes at York Senior College both in the classroom and on Zoom. In 1985\, he took what had been a hobby to a professional level becoming a genealogist with a wide spectrum of clients\, also giving workshops at the Springvale Public Library. With a lifetime love of theater\, he joined the Sanford Maine Stage Senior Theater in the early 2000s. His greatest role was that of Ebenezer Scrooge in the musical production of Scrooge with a Twist. At 91\, he found himself emoting\, singing\, and even dancing. Cheers for living into the nineties and the chutzpah to take on some big challenges!

SUMMARY:CANADIAN/MAINE AUTHOR SUSAN D. HANNAFORD - JUNE 26 @ 6:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe are so excited to welcome back Susan Doherty Hannaford for the launch of her third book\, Monday Rent Boy.  Susan will be here at the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library\, 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport on Wednesday\, June 26 at 6:00 pm.  This event is free and open to the public. A reception with light refreshments will follow. \n \nSusan has a Bachelor of Science from Concordia University and studied journalism at Ryerson University where she was recommended for a job at Macleans Magazine. After Macleans\, she worked in Paris\, France for a digital publishing company\, Atex France\, freelancing for The International Herald Tribune\, La Tribune de Genève\, La Suisse\, and the Independent in London UK.  Back in Canada\, she started her own company\, On Location Productions\, and for 18 years worked in advertising.  During that time\, she studied creative writing at the University of Toronto\, and Concordia University.  Susan has numerous volunteer affiliations: the YMCA and the Douglas Institute and was a long-serving board member of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She was a board member of the Quebec Writers’ Federation (QWF) in Montreal\, and Nazareth Community\, serving men and women with addictions and mental illness. As a committed volunteer\, she works with patients suffering from psychosis through Montreal’s Douglas Institute and has done significant research in the area of bipolar illness and paranoid schizophrenia.  In Toronto\, she created an annual event for the Royal Conservatory of Music\, in a sustained effort to raise their endowment to allow all Canadian would-be professional musicians to study on full bursary. \nPremise of Monday Rent Boy: \nAt eight years of age\, Arthur Barnes and Ernie Castlefrank find themselves on the same altar boy at St. Nick’s\, a situation that readies an unlikely friendship. Father Zipernowski— a pastor referred to as The Zipper\, has given both boys a sterling crucifix that marks them as children conditioned to provide sexual favors for clergy members in the counties of Somerset and Avon.  As Ernie and Arthur slip into lives of petty degeneracy; dope-smoking thieves who steal from the collection plate\, local shops\, parked cars\, and department stores in nearby Bristol\, they laugh off their inner humiliation without ever speaking publicly\, or privately about what has been happening in the vestry. Arthur’s book-thieving leads to an unlikely partnership with Marina Phillips\, the owner of the town bookshop. He has the chance to reinvent himself as a young book critic with eyes to becoming an English major\, a professor\, and a scholar. Ernie’s leg-up comes in the form of a pawnshop owner\, a man with a desire to profit from the exploitation of children in The Pint Room\, a website on the Internet. \n \n\nFor more information\, please call 967-2778 or visit our website:  www.graveslibrary.org
