DESCRIPTION:  \nWe are so excited to welcome back Susan Doherty Hannaford for the launch of her third book\, Monday Rent Boy.  Susan will be here at the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library\, 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport on Wednesday\, June 26 at 6:00 pm.  This event is free and open to the public. A reception with light refreshments will follow. \n \nSusan has a Bachelor of Science from Concordia University and studied journalism at Ryerson University where she was recommended for a job at Macleans Magazine. After Macleans\, she worked in Paris\, France for a digital publishing company\, Atex France\, freelancing for The International Herald Tribune\, La Tribune de Genève\, La Suisse\, and the Independent in London UK.  Back in Canada\, she started her own company\, On Location Productions\, and for 18 years worked in advertising.  During that time\, she studied creative writing at the University of Toronto\, and Concordia University.  Susan has numerous volunteer affiliations: the YMCA and the Douglas Institute and was a long-serving board member of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She was a board member of the Quebec Writers’ Federation (QWF) in Montreal\, and Nazareth Community\, serving men and women with addictions and mental illness. As a committed volunteer\, she works with patients suffering from psychosis through Montreal’s Douglas Institute and has done significant research in the area of bipolar illness and paranoid schizophrenia.  In Toronto\, she created an annual event for the Royal Conservatory of Music\, in a sustained effort to raise their endowment to allow all Canadian would-be professional musicians to study on full bursary. \nPremise of Monday Rent Boy: \nAt eight years of age\, Arthur Barnes and Ernie Castlefrank find themselves on the same altar boy at St. Nick’s\, a situation that readies an unlikely friendship. Father Zipernowski— a pastor referred to as The Zipper\, has given both boys a sterling crucifix that marks them as children conditioned to provide sexual favors for clergy members in the counties of Somerset and Avon.  As Ernie and Arthur slip into lives of petty degeneracy; dope-smoking thieves who steal from the collection plate\, local shops\, parked cars\, and department stores in nearby Bristol\, they laugh off their inner humiliation without ever speaking publicly\, or privately about what has been happening in the vestry. Arthur’s book-thieving leads to an unlikely partnership with Marina Phillips\, the owner of the town bookshop. He has the chance to reinvent himself as a young book critic with eyes to becoming an English major\, a professor\, and a scholar. Ernie’s leg-up comes in the form of a pawnshop owner\, a man with a desire to profit from the exploitation of children in The Pint Room\, a website on the Internet. \n \n\nFor more information\, please call 967-2778 or visit our website:  www.graveslibrary.org

DESCRIPTION:Author Paul Hendrickson \n \nWe are thrilled to welcome celebrated author Paul Hendrickson to our 13th annual Author Event on June 20 at 5:00 PM at the historic Kennebunk River Club Casino\, 116 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport. Purchase tickets online at Eventbrite. \nPaul Hendrickson is an American author\, journalist\, and professor. His eighth book\, Fighting the Night\, will be published on May 7\, 2024. It is an account of his father flying Black Widow night fighters on Iwo Jima in the last part of World War II. The book will come out on the twenty-first anniversary of his father’s death. \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE! \nHe is the author of the 2011 New York Times best seller and National Book Critics Circle Award finalist Hemingway’s Boat: Everything He Loved in Life\, and Lost. For the 2004 book Bound for Glory: America in Color 1939-43\, Hendrickson wrote the introduction and accompanying text. In 2003\, he won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Sons of Mississippi: A Story of Race and Its Legacy. His 1996 work about Vietnam\, The Living and the Dead: Robert McNamara and Five Lives of a Lost War\, was a finalist for the National Book Award. He is the recipient of writing fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Lyndhurst Foundation\, and the Alicia Patterson Foundation. Before joining the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania\, Hendrickson was a staff feature writer at the Washington Post from 1977 to 2001. \nHendrickson was born in California but grew up in the Midwest and in a Catholic seminary in the Deep South\, where he studied for seven years for the missionary priesthood. This became the subject of his first book\, published in 1983: Seminary: A Search. He is also the author of Looking for the Light: The Hidden Life and Art of Marion Post Wolcott\, a finalist for the 1992 National Book Critics Circle Award. \nIn 2009\, Hendrickson was a joint visiting professor of documentary practice at Duke University and of American studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Hendrickson has degrees in English from St. Louis University and Pennsylvania State University. He is married and has two grown sons and lives with his wife\, Cecilia\, outside Philadelphia. \n“We are honored to have Mr. Hendrickson join us this year\,” said Graves Library Executive Director Mary-Lou Boucouvalas. “We are also extremely grateful for the wonderful community support provided by our event sponsors. DESCRIPTION:Maine Authors for Lewiston – Book Signing\n\nNovember 28 – 2:30 to 5:00 PM\n\n\n\nMaine Authors for Lewiston\, an informal group of more than 70 Maine authors\, have banded together to support the victims of the recent tragedy in Lewiston. The group has organized a series of 10 book signings\, all free and open to the public so that people can purchase books and meet the authors. There will be fiction writers\, children’s book authors\, non-fiction writers\, and poets among the participants. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity for Maine book lovers to support local authors\, and most importantly\, to help our fellow Mainers as they begin to heal and recover. \nAll of the participating authors have agreed to donate all\, or most\, of their proceeds from these events to help the healing and recovery efforts in Lewiston. All are volunteering because they care. \nThe authors scheduled to appear at the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library are Bruce Robert Coffin\, William Chanler\, Irene Drago\, Maya Williams\, Jean Flahive\, Jennifer Lunden\, Mike Bove\, Susanne Dunlap\, Mike Culver\, Jennifer Dupree\, Brenda Pollock\, Skip Simonds\, Kate Kearns\, Matt Cost\, David Florig\, Jason Trask\, Norma Salway\, Robert Spencer\, Didi Cooper\, Annaliese Jakimides\, Barry Somes\, Wayne Burton\, Maryann Cocca-Leffler…and others! \nThe Graves Library is located at 18 Maine Street\, Kennebunkport. Dubus’ Such Kindness\, the story of a working-class white man’s terrible fall\, has been called “A powerful portrait of recovered dignity” by People magazine. In Somebody’s Fool\, Russo returns to North Bath\, in upstate New York\, and to the characters that captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of readers in his beloved bestsellers Nobody’s Fool and Everybody’s Fool. \nAs always\, both novels brim with the two authors’ trademark heartrending observations and—especially in Russo’s case—wry humor. These are two masters in peak form. \nRusso and Dubus have read to rapt audiences at Graves Library over the years\, but this very special evening marks the first time the longtime friends will be appearing together in Kennebunkport. \nModerating the conversation will be former Graves Library board member Joshua Bodwell\, editorial director of Godine and Black Sparrow Press. \nThis event is being sponsored by our friends at Vinegar Hill Music Theater. \nPrint : A Bookstore will be selling a variety of the authors’ works during the first hour of the event.  Both Russo and Dubus\, III will stay after their talk to personalize any purchases. \n  \nRichard Russo is the author of ten acclaimed novels\, including Everybody’s Fool and That Old Cape Magic; two collections of stories; and the memoir Elsewhere. In 2002 he received the Pulitzer Prize for Empire Falls\, which\, like Nobody’s Fool\, was adapted into a multiple-award-winning miniseries; in 2017\, he received France’s Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine. His novel\, Somebody’s Fool\, was released in July 2023. \nAndre Dubus III’s books include the New York Times’ bestsellers House of Sand and Fog\, The Garden of Last Days\, and his memoir\, Townie.
