WRITE ON

Enjoy putting pen to paper with your thoughts and stories?  Join us for a different kind of writing group, that will meet once a month.

Creative writing prompts will be given at the end of each meeting. When we meet, we will discuss our findings, share our writing, and get to know our own unique inner talents!  Give us a call at 967-2778 or send an email to mlbgraves@gmail.com to get on board.

Each of us has a story to tell. We would like to invite you to transform those images and memories into stories or essays, for some of you, maybe even poetry.  We might begin with this prompt: “I don’t know why I remember but . . .” Memories are a great way to tap into the creative process and this type of writing often leads to more imaginative writing. What we decide to do with these exercises will be up to you!

SAVING MONEY ON HOME ENERGY BILLS

Saving Money on Home Energy Bills!

With rising costs in heating and electricity, it’s hard to know the best ways to save energy in the home and stay comfortable in the winter and the summer!  Come learn more about what you can do to save money in your home and be more comfortable year-round, and bring your questions about what options make the most sense and will save the most money!  We’ll also go over the rebates available for Maine homeowners and what additional federal funding will be coming with the recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act.

Colin McCullough is a BPI-certified Home Energy Auditor who has worked for several state energy efficiency programs for 12 years, advising homeowners on the most efficient options for a more affordable, comfortable, and safe home.  He is currently renovating his 110-year-old home in Farmingdale to achieve Net-Zero Energy status.

For more information about David Maraniss, visit his website.

Here is what people are saying about David’s latest book, A Path Lit by Lightning

“In different hands I might be dubious, but David Maraniss revives the titanic Jim Thorpe for a new generation with a surgeon’s care, the diligence of a great researcher, and the poignance and humanity that is the signature of his writing. Path Lit By Lightning is a masterful look at this country’s first super-athlete, unflinching from what conquest did to his people, from the rousing and bittersweet journey of fame and identity, nor from an American century often far less heroic than the book’s protagonist. It’s simply brilliant.”

– Howard Bryant, author of The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron

“Goes beyond the myth and into the guts of Thorpe’s life, using extensive research, historical nuance and bittersweet honesty to tell the story of a gifted and complicated man. . . . Maraniss’ biography does justice to the struggles and triumphs of a truly great man.”

– Mary Ann Gwinn, Los Angeles Times

“A sensitive and compelling life of the great, ill-treated athlete Jim Thorpe. . . . Racism was a powerful element in Thorpe’s life, and Maraniss explores this topic with insight and nuance, just as he did in his biography of Roberto Clemente. . . . A tale that, though well known in outline, Maraniss enriches with his considerable skills as a writer and researcher.”
