EVENING BOOK GROUP – via – ZOOM

The Evening Book Group usually meets the last Thursday of every month at 6:00 p.m.   If you would like to participate in our meeting via Zoom, please call the Library (207-967-2778) to be added to the invitation list.

Because of Thanksgiving, this month’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 18 at 6:00 pm.  A link will be sent to all participants early in the day to access the meeting.  We will be discussing Light on Snow by Anita Shreve.

Looking for something to do this fall?  Enjoy putting pen to paper with your thoughts and stories?  Join us for a new and different kind of writing group.  Everything is virtual, everything is safe.  Members of the group will meet using basic Zoom.com platform.  If you would like to join (EVERYONE is welcome!), please let us know and we will send an EMAIL invitation to YOU to join the meeting 24 hours prior.

Creative writing prompts will be given at the end of each meeting.  When we meet, we will discuss our findings, share our writing, and get to know our own unique inner talents!  Give us a call at 967-2778 or send an email to ml@graves.lib.me.us to get on board.

SESSIONS WILL RUN EVERY OTHER WEEK ON TUESDAYS @ 4:00 PM (VIA ZOOM)

Each of us has a story to tell. Perhaps some of you have engaged in journal writing as a way of capturing the fleeting images and memories resulting from the past several months of isolation and social distancing. We would like to invite you to transform those images and memories into stories or essays, for some of you, maybe even poetry. While writing workshops work best in person where members collaborate and offer personal, constructive critique, we offer an online approach that we believe will work well with interested participants. Every two weeks, after the initial introduction, we will provide a prompt in the form of a question or directive. For example, we might begin with this prompt: “I don’t know why I remember but . . .” Memories are a great way to tap into the creative process and this type of writing often leads to more imaginative writing. When we zoom together after two weeks, you can choose to share (or not) and hopefully each participant will respond to the reading in a constructive, non judgmental way. During our initial meeting we will be open to suggestions regarding the time interval, the format and possible prompts. As we approach fall and particularly winter this writing workshop will provide a wide window into the possibilities of written expression. What we decide to do with these exercises will be up to you!

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS – ONLINE AUCTION (11/16/20 through 12/1/20)

The Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library will be hosting an on-line fundraiser in November to help with budget shortfalls due to canceled events earlier this year.  “Home for the Holidays” consists of themed baskets that will be for sale through 32auctions.com/HOMEFOR.  If you are looking for a gift for the holidays, stay-at-home nights, or a treat for yourself, sign on to the auction site (November 16 THROUGH December 1) and start bidding.  Twenty-five baskets are being designed and donated by friends of the Library, which means that 100 percent of the sales will directly benefit the Library.  A few choices to consider:  A Night in Boston’s North End (sort of), Tequila Mockingbird, Of All the Gin Joints, Games People Play, and many, many more.  Please feel free to call us at (207) 967-2778 for more details.

Once the auction closes (8:00 pm on December 1), you will be notified if your bid was the highest and we will make arrangements for pick up, shipping, etc.  Some perishables will need to be added prior to pick up for freshest content.  We hope you will find the perfect basket for you!

This month, the meeting will be held on Thursday, July 30 at 6:00 pm.  A link will be sent to all participants early in the day to access the meeting.  We will be discussing The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek written by Kim Richardson.

 

 

In 1936, Bluet is the last of the Kentucky Blues. In the dusty Appalachian hills of Troublesome Creek, nineteen and blue-skinned, Bluet has used up her last chance for “respectability” and a marriage bed. Instead, she joins the historical Pack Horse Library Project of Kentucky and becomes a librarian, riding up treacherous mountains on a mule to deliver books and other reading material to the poor hill communities of Eastern Kentucky.

Along her dangerous route, Bluet confronts many who are distrustful of her blue skin. Not everyone is so keen on Bluet’s family or the Library Project, and the impoverished Kentuckians are quick to blame a Blue for any trouble in their small town.

Inspired by the true and historical blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek provides an authentic Appalachian voice to a story of hope, heartbreak and raw courage and shows one woman’s strength, despite it all, to push beyond the dark woods of Troublesome Creek.

The Nickel Boys is a 2019 novel by American novelist Colson Whitehead. It was based on the real story of the Dozier School, a reform school in Florida that operated for 111 years and had its history exposed by a university’s investigation. It was named one of TIME’S best books of the decade.  It is set in Florida and New York City.
